Beckenham School Library
(Whare Pukapuka)
A LIBRARY
It's only a room with shelves and books, but it's far more magical than it looks It's a jet on which I soar to lands that exist no more. Or a key with which I find answers to questions crowding my mind. Building my habit of learning and growing, asking and researching till I reach knowing. Here, I've been a mermaid and an elf I've even learned to be more myself. I think that I shall never see a place that's been more useful to me. With encouraging kind friends with wit Who tell me to dream big and never quit. It's only a room with shelves and books, but it's far more magical than it looks
Notice
On 10 January 2013 a fire destroyed our beautiful library. We are in the process of building a collection of books that will be even more wonderful than the books we have lost (if that is possible). This process is exciting but it will take time. You will see our collection grow as the weeks, months go by and you will be able to access the catalogue as before (online). In the interim the National Library has been incredibly helpful and supportive, they have supplied, on loan, shelving and books. We have received an overwhelming number of books, donated by the community and from around New Zealand. These books have been processed and shelved in our temporary library in Room 19, thanks to the efforts of wonderful parents and PTA members who have spent hours stamping and labelling them readying them for cataloguing.

Library Guidelines
How many books can I have? Classes are timetabled to visit the library each week to read and exchange books. Students can borrow 2 books. Books are issued for 14 days, they can then be re-issued (if there are no reserves on that book) or returned. If no action is taken then these books are classified as 'overdue'. Overdue books Classrooms are advised via the Daily Notices which students have overdue books and Parent/Caregivers receive an email notification. Books that are not returned within 100 days may result in a letter requesting payment or replacement of overdue book/s. Lost or damaged books If a book is damaged or lost a letter requesting payment or replacement is issued. If there are any concerns over lost books you are welcome to discuss the situation with the class teacher or myself in the library. Lost books often turn up. Reserving a book Students can 'reserve' books that have been issued to another student, either at the library or online. For reserving online you will need your personal library ID number. You can request this number when next in the library. You will be notified when your book is available.
Student Librarians and Class Monitors
Year 7 & 8 students are invited to become Student Librarians. Their role is to work in the library at lunch time, issuing, returning, shelving, tidying etc. Year 5 & 6 students have turns being Library Monitors. These students gain experience in the library issuing, returning and shelving their class books during their weekly class visits, under the supervision of their Classroom Teacher or myself.
Library Hours 9:00am - 3:00pm
Library is open during Interval 10:30-10:50am and during lunch break from 12:40pm - 1:15pm.
