Maori Place Names & their translation

  • Akaroa - Long Harbour
  • Aoraki - 'cloud sky', or 'cloud piercer'. The Maori name for Mount Cook.
  • Aotearoa - 'cloud white long', or 'land of the long white cloud. The Maori name for New Zealand.
  • Aramoana - pathway to (or beside) the sea
  • Hauraki - North Wind
  • Hawera - The Burning Place
  • Kapiti - Joining (or Boundary) Place
  • Kohimarama - to gather up the scraps or chips
  • Matapouri - either Black Duck, or gloom, murky, somber
  • Maungati - Mountain of cabbage tree
  • Moeraki - sleepy sky
  • Paerau - hundred ridges
  • Pauanui - Big Paua
  • Papatoetoe - flat pampas grass

Music in the library and....

"CSM tutors come to Beckenham every week. Our Library is multi-functional and on Wednesday our wonderful student musicians have their music lessons in the temporary Library (Room 10) and the adjoining, temporary Multi Purpose Room (Room11) as well as the Major and Minor music rooms. It is a great day full of wonderful music. After 3pm the Concert Band rehearse in the Hall and then at 4pm the Jazz Band come together for their rehearsal. " Mrs Chin
